= Subject-specific criterion examination Code of the exam: OTK-SZV-ANG \\ Responsible professor: János Kenyeres, PhD \\ Accreditation status: AT \\ The aim of the exam is for the examinee to demonstrate their comprehensive knowledge of linguistics, applied linguistics, cultural studies and literature as well as their ability to apply this knowledge with sound understanding and critical thinking. === (A) Knowledge The examinees * have critical understanding and a systematic overall knowledge of the subjects, * are familiar with the literature and culture of English-speaking peoples, * have knowledge of the key notions, levels of analysis and understand the basics of linguistics, * are familiar with the most important and pedagogically relevant fields of applied linguistics, * are familiar with the global lingua franca role of English and the functions English fulfils in various English-speaking regions, * are aware of the spread and diversity of English-speaking cultures, * are familiar with the various intellectual and artistic movements and their products in several English-speaking cultures. === (B) Skills The examinees are able to * critically read, interpret and analyse subject-related texts in the English language, * establish the connection between and within different topic areas of the relevant subjects, * think logically, see connections, identify problems and work on their solutions, * apply their knowledge and familiarity with various theories to solve novel problems and tasks, * use the relevant register and terminology, * can extract purposefully, analyse, comprehend, organise, and synthesise content from thematically related academic texts, * apply and present their knowledge in fluent English correctly and appropriately as is required by the particular context of use. === (C) Attitudes The examinees * aim to develop the ability of knowledge-based, critical thinking, * aim to complete academic reading, writing, and presentation tasks purposefully and accurately, * find tolerance towards groups from different cultures and languages important, * are open to try out novel approaches to solving problems. === (D) Autonomy and responsibility The examinees * can complete tasks independently, without assistance, * can express articulated, independent, balanced and well-informed views and arguments reflecting a progressive and ethically responsible value system, * form and express individual opinion concerning works, authors and trends with care and due tolerance, * take responsibility for individual work in general. == Evaluation The grade will be the average calculated based on the marks received for the following courses/exams: * OT-ANG-151 Foundations of Syntax * OT-ANG-275 Cultural studies: the English-speaking World * OT-ANG-125 The History of British Literature: An Overview * OT-ANG22-220 American culture * OT-ANG-261 Applied Linguistics * OT-ANG22-391 English language proficiency exam (C1) The grade will be decided by the calcualated average as follows: 1.51–2.5 means poor (2)\\ 2.51–3.5 means average (3)\\ 3.51–4.5 means good (4)\\ 4.51-5.0 means excellent (5)
